DAY 2 REIMS

Breakfast & gym

Our Cultural activities continue as we begin by a morning walk to visit The Porte de Mars Roman Arch of 32m long build in 3rd century by Romans which was the north entrance of the city of DUROCORTORUM (Reims),

The Arch

The monumental Mars Gate dates from the first part of the 3rd century and is the only remaining of four gates that gave access to the Gallo-Roman town known as Durocortorum.] The arch stands 32 metres long and 13 metres high, with three wide arched openings.

From the historian Roman Arch we continue our cultural walking tour and visit the Reims Cathedral, Notre-Dame de Reims, meaning "Our Lady of Reims"  The Cathedral became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

The cathedral was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was the traditional location for the coronation of the kings of France. Reims Cathedral is considered to be one of the most important pieces of Gothic architecture.  The cathedral church is thought to have been founded by the bishop Nicasius in the early 5th century.   Construction of the present Reims Cathedral began in the 13th century and concluded in the 14th century. A prominent example of High Gothic architecture, it was built to replace an earlier church destroyed by fire in 1210.

In the afternoon we visit the exceptional estate; the POMMERY champagne cellars, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

The Elizabethan-style building is about to reveal so much more.  The underground cathedrals dating from the Gallo-Roman era, some of which have monumental bas-reliefs sculpted in chalk. An exceptional journey 30 meters underground where you can also admire the works of the latest contemporary art exhibition.  The Pommery is a perfect combination for the  love for art and champagne.  The Pommery in Reims constructed the invention of brut champagne in 1874.

The 2 hour visit will include English speaking guided tour including the Pommery caves, visit of the villa Demoiselle and champagne tasting.

Evening at own leisure with plenty of the finest restaurant choices.
